Empowering our community through Volunteerism, Civic Participation & Social Responsibility

Mission

We foster a culture of proactive volunteerism, civic participation, and social responsibility, believing that these are the foundations of empowerment and self-determination. We are committed to providing resources, support, and opportunities to the ADOS community to collectively enhance their socio-political influence, economic standing, and to cultivate a powerful voice that reflects our diverse and vibrant community.

About

The ADOS Empowerment Project has built a strong network of community led organizations that are dedicated to improving the social welfare of descendants of chattel slavery and disenfranchised groups across the state of Mississippi.

Community Organizing

The ADOS Empowerment Project’s mission is to promote civic engagement through community organizing and volunteerism. Here are some Milestones:

Peaceful Demonstrations

Organized a peaceful demonstration in Gulfport, Ms to raise awareness about the police shooting of 16 year old Jaheim McMillan. A similar demonstration was organized in Taylorsville, Mississippi after Rasheem Carter’s remains were found in a shallow reservoir. The local NAACP launched an investigation into the Carter case due to organizers' efforts.

Community-led Town Halls

Organized a Town Hall with local community leaders and residents in Gulfport, Mississippi to discuss solutions to police brutality and misconduct. Influenced policy to address the lack of deescalation training in police departments across Harrison County. Helped to create a mentorship program with the Building Bridges advocacy organization in Gulfport to support students with after school programs

Effective DOJ Investigations

Partnered with Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party President to help organize a Police Brutality Summit with Dr. Cornel West and guest speaker ADOS Advocacy Foundation President Yvette Carnell. Worked with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to draft language in a letter to Assistant Attorney General Kirsten Clarke, and the Department of Justice expressing concerns about the patterns of practice in Rankin and Lexington Counties. This led to a DOJ investigation of both counties and the indictment of 6 Rankin County Sheriffs.
